After my recent trip downtown to Magnolia Bakery, I felt a desire to try my hand at recreating their classic yellow cupcakes at home. I pulled out my trusty Magnolia Bakery cookbook and got to work. The results were delicious!
I hit a bit of a speed bump in the middle here. The cupcakes were all baked up nicely and I made the first frosting that I saw in the book – a simple confectioner’s sugar + butter concoction. It was a nice white color, but the flavor left something to be desired. I asked my sister what I should do (as she was to be the recipient of a large number of these cupcakes), and she voted for chocolate. This was where things took a turn for the better. Moral of the story: flip through the whole frosting section of the book before choosing one!
Other moral: Chocolate is always the answer.
Get the cupcake recipe here and the chocolate buttercream recipe here. Helpful hint: I didn’t feel like searching for self-rising flour, so I made my own by following these instructions.

A basic vanilla cake with chocolate frosting is my favorite combo ever–these look like they came out delish!
Chocolate is DEFINITELY always the answer!! And sprinkles, too. These look so yummy!!
Blonde in this City
OMG. Yes please. Those look so so tasty!
They look delicious! I can't remember when was the last time I baked cupcakes. I think I might have to this Thanksgiving with my little sis.
Yum! Love homemade cupcakes. I love the Sprinkles frosting recipe. I actually cheat and just use cake mix from a box, but a slamming homemade frosting recipe takes it to the next level!
Ooooh these look TOO good! And yes, I agree that chocolate is always the answer 😉
You definitely should, so yummy!
Haha, hope you try them out! They were pretty easy and very yummy 🙂
I definitely agree. Wish I had some leftovers still!
My favorite too, definitely the best combo out there.
Yes, they would be fun to bake around the holidays! Great idea.
I have to try that frosting recipe, I love Sprinkles! And that is such a great idea, homemade frosting totally elevates cake from a box. The frosting makes all the difference!
So yummy! We have a cupcake shop opening on our corner next month…trouble! 😉
Oooh, you're lucky…but yes, quite dangerous 🙂
Oh yummmm!!! These look delicious! Might need to make them for Halloween! 😉
