Quick Design Tip: Removing Book Jackets

Book Jackets featured by top interior designer York Avenue

I’m not sure if this will be the most obvious tip in the world or something that some people never thought of, but I wanted to share one of my favorite quick design tips today. Here it is: peek under book jackets! Often the cover and spine are different from the book jacket, and sometimes they’re really pretty or creative. Here are a few of my favorite examples:

Removing Book Jackets:

Kate Spade: Things We Love – an almost blindingly neon pink cover with gold lettering – love it!

The Gardens of Bunny Mellon – the prettiest garden image that wraps around the back and spine. What I wouldn’t give to be walking around that garden right now! (I’m over winter, if you couldn’t tell).

India Hicks: A Slice of England – India Hicks’ book has the loveliest, palest pink underneath the jacket.

Celerie Kemble: Black and White (And a Bit in Between) – a gorgeous, chic marble effect for Celerie Kemble’s classic coffee table book.

Hope this little tip was helpful for anyone looking to switch up the look of their bookshelf a bit!

But what do you do with the dust jackets? Throw them or keep them?

I thought of doing this, and then wondered at the “cannon” around it in the design world. I stumbled upon your blog.

Question: Would you typically do this for an entire bookshelf, or just the ones with exemplary covers?

    And what of the paperbacks!?
