Everlane recently released their Petra Crossbody bag, and I have to say, I’m smitten. I don’t know what it is about Everlane – they just seem to get it. This bag is super simple, and yet so far from boring. It feels very now, and yet also timeless and classic…how do they even pull off a combination like that? I love that it’s a simple piece that’s as far from “trendy” (not a word I enjoy), as you can get – no logos, no major hardware, just clean lines and quality materials. I could see myself loving and using this bag in any and all situations for literally decades to come – now isn’t that a great (and all too rare) feeling, when you’re laying out decent money on an item? And speaking of the cost…on their website, Everlane has an infographic showing the actual cost to make the item (including labor, materials, hardware, etc), followed by their price ($365), and then the traditional retail price for a bag made with the same materials and labor. Guess what that price is? $1300. WHAT. The fact that Everlane is laying all of this out there on their site is not only admirable, but absolutely refreshing and eye-opening.
The Petra is made of suede and Italian leather, in Venice. When you consider the fact that it’s being produced in Europe alongside top luxury products, the price tag doesn’t seem so hefty. Add to that the fact that this is clearly a quality piece that you could use for a lifetime, and you start to understand why this bag has swiftly shot to the top of my wishlist!
Since the Petra is so versatile, I was inspired to put together two looks with it: one casual but put-together, and one super fancy. Here the bag elevates a pair of distressed skinnies and a casual sweatshirt:
