Things to Do in NYC: Upcoming Events

things-to-do-in-nyc

One of my lovely readers recently suggested that I compile a list of upcoming things to do in NYC, something I’ve never done before despite my many NYC Guide posts. Great idea – thank you Grace! I’ve done exactly that, and I hope this will help anyone who lives here or is planning a trip. Of course this isn’t a comprehensive guide – I didn’t just want to copy and paste from TimeOut NY or anything. I’ve done some searching and curated events that interest me and that I think will interest you guys. Also, sometimes events pop up at the last minute so maybe I’ll edit the post later on if anything great comes up…or perhaps write a separate post…we’ll see. Anyway, read on for some fun things to do in NYC currently, and in the upcoming months!

Isaac Mizrahi Exhibition at The Jewish Museum

Where: The Jewish Museum, 1109 5th Avenue at 92nd St.

When: March 18 – August 7, 2016

Why: I love pretty much all fashion exhibitions, and this promises to be an interesting look into the career of a colorful designer.

 Denim: Fashion’s Frontier

Where: The Museum at FIT – Fashion & Textile History Gallery – Seventh Avenue at 27th Street

When: December 1, 2015 – May 7, 2016.

Why: A fashion exhibit about the history of denim – sounds awesome!

Smorgasburg

Where: Williamsburg on Saturdays, Prospect Park on Sundays.

When: Opening weekend is April 2, 2016.

Why: So. Much. Food. This outdoor festival is a blast. It’s packed with people and vendors selling amazing food from all over NYC and Brooklyn – Dough doughnuts, ramen burgers, barbecue, boba…there’s everything under the sun that you’ve ever wanted to try.

Watercolor Classes with Inslee

Where: 73 Spring Street in Soho at the Society Social showroom.

When: These will be held monthly, and they sell out quick, so get on the mailing list!

Why: Inslee is a crazy talented artist and this seems like such a fun way to spend an evening whether you’re artistically inclined or not!

Fairy Tale Fashion

Where: The Museum at FIT – Special Exhibitions Gallery – Seventh Avenue at 27th Street

When: January 15 – April 16, 2016

Why: Check out my review here!

New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show

Where: New York Botanical Garden, 2900 Southern Blvd, Bronx, NY.

When: February 27 – April 17 2016

Why: Learn about “orchidelirium,” when explorers in the 19th century risked their lives to procure exotic orchids from jungles. Plus, see pretty orchids!

Beauty: Cooper-Hewitt Design Triennial

Where: The Cooper-Hewitt Museum

When: February 12 – August 21, 2016

Why: The Cooper-Hewitt is a gorgeous and innovative museum and this exhibition sounds interesting and unique.

The Crucible on Broadway

Where: Walter Kerr Theater 219 West 48th Street

When: 20 week engagement – previews begin March 1, opens March 31 2016.

Why: Looks creepy and awesome, and anything having to do with the Salem Witch trials is usually really interesting. I’m going in April so will report back!

Cherry Bombe Jubilee 2016

Where: The High Line Hotel.

When: Sunday April 10, 2016. Tickets are available for purchase here and cost $225/person.

Why: Cherry Bombe is a gorgeous biannual magazine that celebrates women and food. The Jubilee is a day long conference that will feature panel discussions and presentations revolving around these subjects. Expect lots of amazing foodie women to be in attendance and presenting!

Met Museum Spring Costume Exhibition: Manus x Machina

Where: Metropolitan Museum of Art

When: May 5 – August 14, 2016.

Why: The spring Costume Exhibition is the big one, for which the Met Ball is held, and it’s always worth seeing. This year’s theme sounds especially compelling, as it explores the intersection of technology and fashion.

Kips Bay Decorator Show House 2016

Where: The Carlton House at 19 East 61st Street (between Madison & Fifth Avenue).

When: May 12 – June 9, 2016

Why: Kips Bay is probably my favorite annual show house, and I love going every year with my Mom. It’s always cool to see what location they pick and how each designer does their room. See my pictures from last year’s Kips Bay Show House here (it was a great one!).

The City Bakery Annual Hot Chocolate Festival

Where: The City Bakery, 3 West 18th Street

When: February 1 – February 29, 2016

Why: Hot chocolate, duh! In flavors like Salted Caramel, Lemon, “Sunken Treasure,” and many more. Click here for a calendar of flavors.

Pancake Month at Clinton Street Baking Co.

  1. We HAVE to have a City Bakery/FIT museum day, girl! Also, the Frieze Art Fair! It’s still a ways away (May 5-8th) But I remember us being bummed for missing it last year. Great list!

Hi Josette! I don’t have an email update on events, but you can sign up for my emails to stay up-to-date on current posts. For sweet spots and art, you can go to my NYC Guide and tick off the box for “sweet spots,” and the box for “art” or “museums,” and my recommendations will pop up. As for Broadway shows, I recently saw American in Paris and absolutely LOVED it. Highly recommend. Enjoy your trip!
