The Doughnuttery

When was the last time you had a warm, fresh doughnut, hot out of the fryer? Never? Yup, me too. That’s why I’m newly obsessed with The Doughnuttery, an adorable little shop tucked waaaayyy in the back of Chelsea Market, which is frying up incredibly delicious mini doughnuts right before your very eyes.

This is where you watch your doughnuts getting fried up. Those ones on the right are frying on the bottom side, then the little contraption flips them over as they float along in the aisle, so the other side can get fried! How cute is that. You can watch a video of it happening on their site here. Then they drop out of the fryer to get sugared.
Here are just a few of the unique sugars available at The Doughnuttery, which they combine to create unique flavor combinations on their doughnuts. For example, I got the Paris Time, with a mix of pistachio, lavender, and vanilla sugars. There’s a Mulled Apple Cider doughnut, with fall spices, green apple, and orange zest, the Lemon Pop, with lemon, vanilla, and poppy seeds, and Speckled Strawberry, with strawberry sugar, lemon thyme, and sprinkles, to name just a few. In addition, they have classic glazed, powdered, and cinnamon sugar doughnuts, as well as dipping sauces (which I regrettably did not try).

I was excited to try the interesting sugar combination on the Paris Time, but what I wasn’t expecting was how warm they were, with a perfectly fried, slightly crisp outside, and a moist, soft center (don’t ask me why I wasn’t expecting that, I watched them get fried right in front of my face :). I’ve had lots of doughnuts in my life obviously, but never any like these. They were just so, so delicious. I seriously wanted to eat a hundred of them but luckily, I only bought six. Since they were so mini, I didn’t feel guilty. Solid logic, right 🙂

I'm normally not a huge doughnut fan (with the exception of a few cider doughnuts in the fall) but these look fantastic enough to change my mind.
