NYC Guide: Thai Ice Cream Rolls at 10 Below

Exciting news: I’ve definitely found my new favorite ice cream place in New York City. 10 Below makes Thai ice cream rolls, which is this really cool process where they pour the starter and the mix-ins onto a cold slab, and then mix, mix, mix while it freezes and changes states right before your very eyes, going from liquid to solid in mere minutes. Then they scrape it off in rolls, finish it off with your choice of toppings, and voila! Totally fresh, no stabilizers, no additives. It’s not just a gimmicky thing either – I absolutely love this ice cream. It has a really great flavor and unique texture that’s a little different from regular ice cream – kind of reminded me a bit of Dippin Dots (but way, way better) – but you know that sort of freeze-dried texture? Seriously, it’s so delicious. I cannot wait to go back. And in case my description of how it’s made left you a bit baffled, scroll to the end for a little video!

I recruited my friend Nicole for a hand model 🙂

Please excuse my inexpert video skills (a filmmaker I am not!), but you get the idea. 10 Below has four locations – one in Queens, the original in Chinatown, a big one with seating on the Lower East Side, and a brand new outpost on St. Mark’s Place.

That looks so good! A place like this in Philly opened up right after I moved away, so now I need to hunt one down in DC so that I can finally try this, haha.

I think it’s going to be catching on, there will probably be a DC iteration if there isn’t already!
