NYC Guide: by Chloe

Not at all ashamed to admit that at first, my main attraction to the new West Village vegan eatery by Chloe was the beyond-adorable branding. The black and white striped awning, the typography, the cute illustrations…the minute I saw all that I was excited to visit. When I finally did, I found out that there’s way more to this place than just hype and good branding. The food here is flat out delicious. And it’s vegan! It’s all vegan, people! French fries, burgers, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls…but all vegan, plant-based, meat, dairy, GMO, and egg-free. No additives, no preservatives no artificial flavors. Just fresh, delicious food, prepared from scratch in-house, that you can feel great about eating. To tell you the truth, since I’m the queen of sugar consumption, I’m still in shock that I found food I enjoy this much that isn’t unhealthy.

The founder of by Chloe, Chef Chloe Coscarelli, is a pretty impressive person (to say the least). She’s only 28 years old and she’s already written three cookbooks, become the first vegan chef to win a nationally televised food competition with her vegan cupcakes on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars, and launched by Chloe in 2014 to instant success. She partnered with Esquared Hospitality for the venture, and between her tasty, healthy recipes and the charming branding (done to perfection by Paperwhite Studios in collaboration with Samantha Wasser), it’s perfectly unsurprising to note that you’ll find lines out the door at by Chloe on the daily (but they move quickly, luckily!). To learn more about Chef Chloe, check out her interview on the Cherry Bombe podcast – definitely worth a listen.

The French fries are air-baked (not fried), and probably how good these were was one of the most surprising things to me while visiting. They also have beet ketchup to go along with them, which is a pleasant shade of pink.

Every, single detail here is adorable and perfect. I mean look at the inside of the cupcake box!

And let’s talk about this – the “Chlostess cupcake,” which is their take on the classic-but-yucky Hostess cupcake. I’ve never eaten a Hostess cupcake so I can’t really compare the two, but I can tell you I don’t even like dark chocolate and yet I absolutely loved this cupcake. It was completely delicious, not cloyingly sweet, with a great texture. And it’s vegan! (sorry, I just can’t seem to get over this).

Two of their brunch selections – the AB&B toast (raw almond butter and banana on 7 grain toast), and the morning oats with quinoa, flaxseed, steel cut oats, and fresh berries (topped with maple syrup, raw almond butter, and bananas). There’s also a daily pancake with whipped maple butter, quinoa hash browns, a scrambled tofu on toast, and more.

I’m dying to try their quinoa taco salad and kale, yes, that’s right, kale cookies and cream ice cream. Next up for by Chloe are locations in Flatiron and Soho, as well as an all sweets shop to open next to this West Village location. Cannot wait, because I tried their chocolate chip cookie and it is delish.

Ahhh they are on Postmates? That’s going to be bad for me to know…their delivery fees are so high but I’ve used them more times than I can count anyway. The cupcake is SO. Good. Kind of want to order one right now 🙂
